Wholefoods began in 1989 when Scott Kinnear set out to make organic shopping simpler for Melbourne families. At the time, finding all your organic groceries in one place was nearly impossible. So Scott created a store where people could do their weekly shop knowing everything was natural, ethical, and locally sourced.

The first Wholefoods opened on Lygon Street in Brunswick, quickly becoming a community favourite for those passionate about good food and sustainable living. Over the years, as Melbourne’s organic movement grew, so did we! Opening stores in Fitzroy and Flemington, each built on the same commitment to local farmers, genuine organics, and environmental care.

Today, Wholefoods remains proudly Melbourne-owned and operated, still guided by Scott’s original vision: to make wholesome, honest food accessible to everyone, while supporting the people and producers who make it possible.

For Scott and his family, that mission has always been personal - providing nourishing food for their own children and for families across the city.
