Our Story
Wholefoods was founded in 1989 by Scott Kinnear, after he found it impossible to buy all of his organic grocery shopping at one shop. While there were a few organic stores scattered throughout Melbourne, none had everything he needed for his young family.
So, Scott decided to open a one-stop-organic-grocery-shop where customers could do all their weekly shopping in a single shop! The first Wholefoods store then opened on Lygon Street in Brunswick, and immediately became a popular destination for the growing number of people concerned about eating healthy food, as well as their environmental impact

Ten years later, a second Wholefoods store was opened on Smith Street in Fitzroy, followed by a third store in Daylesford, where Scott was living at the time. This store was sold in 2010, and Scott decided it was time to move back to Melbourne.

In 2015, Wholefoods Flemington opened its doors, followed by East Brunswick Village in April 2021, and St Kilda in 2022. Scott has since sold the East Brunswick Village and St Kilda stores to This Earth This Food. Today, Wholefoods consists of three stores—located in Brunswick, Fitzroy, and Flemington.

Beyond running Wholefoods, Scott and his wife Vanessa have their hands full raising their lively trio of young children. With four fully-grown kids already thriving, providing for family has always been the driving force behind their dedication to healthy living.
